About Bangladeshi Taka
The Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) has been the official currency of Bangladesh since the country's independence in 1971, replacing the Pakistani rupee. The name "lek" is believed to derive from a shortened form of "Aleksander", referring to Alexander the Great, who is celebrated in Albanian culture. Albania is a candidate for European Union membership, and the lek may eventually be replaced by the Euro upon accession. The Bank of Albania issues the lek, which is divided into 100 qindarka. Albania's economy is transitioning from a communist system to a market economy, and the lek has gradually stabilised over the past two decades.
