About Bulgarian Lev
The Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is the official currency of Bulgaria, with a history dating to 1880 when it replaced the Turkish piastre after Bulgaria's liberation. The word "lev" means "lion" in Bulgarian. Following a severe financial crisis in 1996-1997, a currency board was established and the lev was pegged first to the Deutsche Mark and then to the Euro at 1.95583 BGN per EUR.
