About Georgian Lari
The Georgian Lari (GEL) has been the official currency of Georgia since 1995, replacing the Georgian coupon at a rate of one million to one following the economic collapse after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The name "lari" derives from an old Georgian word meaning "hoard" or "property". The National Bank of Georgia manages monetary policy with a floating exchange rate regime. The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency of Turkey and Turkish Northern Cyprus. Turkey redenominated in 2005, replacing the old Turkish lira at a rate of 1,000,000 to 1 to eliminate the impact of decades of high inflation. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) manages monetary policy. Turkey has experienced acute currency crises and high inflation periodically, with significant depreciations in 2018, 2021, and after the earthquake of 2023.
