About Honduran Lempira

The Honduran Lempira (HNL) is the official currency of Honduras, named after Lempira, an indigenous Lenca chief who led resistance against Spanish colonisation in the 16th century and is celebrated as a national hero. The lempira was introduced in 1931 to replace the Honduran peso. The Banco Central de Honduras manages monetary policy. The Banco Central de Nicaragua manages monetary policy with a crawling peg exchange rate that depreciates against the US Dollar at a controlled rate of approximately 3% per year.
