About Kyrgyzstani Som
The Kyrgyzstani Som (KGS) has been the official currency of Kyrgyzstan since 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble following independence. The word "som" means "pure" in Kyrgyz and several other Turkic languages, historically referring to pure silver or gold. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic manages monetary policy with a managed float regime. Its name derives from the historic silver coin used in medieval Armenia. The Central Bank of Armenia oversees monetary policy and issues dram banknotes and coins. Armenia's economy is heavily influenced by remittances from the Armenian diaspora and exports of diamonds, minerals, and brandy. The dram is divided into 100 luma, though luma coins are no longer in circulation due to low purchasing power.
