About Moldovan Leu
The Moldovan Leu (MDL) has been the official currency of Moldova since 1993, replacing the Moldovan cupon interim currency used after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The word "leu" means "lion" in Romanian. The National Bank of Moldova manages monetary policy with a managed float. Moldova is one of Europe's least developed countries, with an economy strongly dependent on agriculture (wine, fruits, vegetables), remittances from the large Moldovan diaspora working in Russia and EU countries, and light manufacturing. The leu is divided into 100 bani.
About Bosnian Convertible Mark
The Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM) was introduced in 1995 following the Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the Bosnian War. It replaced the Bosnian dinar and has been pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate of 1.95583 BAM per EUR since 1998 (originally pegged to the Deutsche Mark). This currency board arrangement ensures full convertibility and monetary discipline. The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina issues the BAM but has no power to conduct independent monetary policy due to the peg. The "marka" design on banknotes reflects both Bosniak and Croat cultural heritage.
