The word "leu" means "lion" in Romanian. The National Bank of Moldova manages monetary policy with a managed float. Moldova is one of Europe's least developed countries, with an economy strongly dependent on agriculture (wine, fruits, vegetables), remittances from the large Moldovan diaspora working in Russia and EU countries, and light manufacturing.
