The name "lek" is believed to derive from a shortened form of "Aleksander", referring to Alexander the Great, who is celebrated in Albanian culture. Albania is a candidate for European Union membership, and the lek may eventually be replaced by the Euro upon accession. The Bank of Albania issues the lek, which is divided into 100 qindarka.
