The Uruguayan Peso (UYU) is the official currency of Uruguay, one of Latin America's most stable, prosperous, and democratic nations. The current peso was introduced in 1993, replacing the nuevo peso at a rate of 1,000 to 1 following a period of inflation. The Banco Central del Uruguay manages monetary policy with a floating exchange rate. The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the official currency of the Maldives, an archipelago of 1,200 coral islands in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) manages monetary policy. The rufiyaa is pegged to the US Dollar at a rate of approximately 15.42 MVR per USD within a narrow band. The Maldivian economy is almost entirely dependent on tourism - the Maldives is one of the world's premier luxury travel destinations - and fishing.
