About South African Rand
The South African Rand (ZAR) is the official currency of South Africa, taking its name from the Witwatersrand (White Waters Ridge), the major gold reef that underpins the Johannesburg metropolitan area and made South Africa the world's leading gold producer for much of the 20th century. Introduced in 1961 when South Africa became a republic, the rand replaced the South African pound. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) manages monetary policy with a floating exchange rate.

The British Pound Sterling (GBP), symbolised by the pound sign "£", is the world's oldest currency still in use, with roots dating to Anglo-Saxon England in the 8th century.
