About Zambian Kwacha
The Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), meaning "dawn" or "freedom" in Nyanja, was redenominated in January 2013 at a rate of 1,000 old kwacha (ZMK) to 1 new kwacha (ZMW), eliminating the large denominations that had accumulated from years of inflation. The Bank of Zambia manages monetary policy. Zambia is Africa's second largest copper producer and copper accounts for the bulk of its export revenues, making the kwacha highly sensitive to global copper prices. Zambia became the first African nation to default on its debt in the post-pandemic era in 2020, and completed a debt restructuring process in 2023.
About Kazakhstani Tenge
The Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT) became the official currency of Kazakhstan in November 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble following independence in 1991. Kazakhstan is Central Asia's largest and wealthiest economy, possessing enormous reserves of oil, natural gas, uranium (the world's top uranium producer), copper, zinc, and other minerals. The National Bank of Kazakhstan manages monetary policy. The tenge experienced significant devaluations in 2009 and 2015 in response to falling oil prices and the devaluation of the Russian ruble.
